  • Amrita Kuteeram Housing Program: Construction of 100,000 homes in the next 10 years for homeless people throughout India.  This is in addition to the 25,000 homes completed between 1996 and 2001.
  • Pensions for Destitute Women: Provides regular lifelong pensions to 50,000 widowed and destitute women throughout India.
  • Free Food: Meals, rice, milk and clothes provided for more than 50,000 people via branch ashrams throughout India.
  • Care Home for the Aged: One home located in Tamil Nadu; two more to open soon in Kerala and Karnataka states.
  • Amrita Niketan Orphanage: Provides excellent education, a secure home, nourishing food and loving care to more than 500 children in Kerala.
  • Amrita Kripa Hospital: Provides free medical care to hundreds of villagers near the organization’s headquarters each day.
  • Amrita Kripa Sagar Hospice: Provides free care to patients suffering from terminal cancer near Mumbai.
  • Charitable Medical Camps: Provide checkups, eye treatments and distribute medicine throughout India.
  • Ayurvedic Clinic: Provides free treatment and consultation for the poor near the organization’s  headquarters, and fee-based services for those who can pay.
  • Amrita Institute of Medical Science (AIMS): State-of-the-art hospital in Cochin, Kerala; lauded as a model for Indian health service, provides specialized services such as heart transplants and kidney dialysis as well as general medical care. Consultations and treatments are free or subsidized for those in need; those who can pay are charged a minimal fee.
  • Earthquake Relief: The organization provided emergency medical relief, food and temporary shelters for the homeless and undertook the complete rebuilding of three villages that had been entirely destroyed by the Gujarat earthquake in 2001. Over 1200 earthquake-proof houses were constructed, as well as a community hall, water tank, sanitation and electrical systems and places of worship for Christians, Muslims and Hindus in each village.
  • Amma’s Kitchen: feeding programs located in major metropolitan areas throughout the United States and Europe.

2. UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION

  • Amrita Vidyalayam Schools: 45 primary and secondary schools provide the best in academics throughout India.  A large number of  children from poverty-stricken families are given scholarships.
  • Indigenous Peoples’ Project: To help uplift the tribal population through education, the goal of this project is to build 50 schools throughout Kerala, including ten that would admit adult students as well as  children, and a vocational training center.
  • Amrita Speech and Hearing Improvement School: Provides scientific specialized education to more than 80 full-time speech- and hearing-impaired children.

3. UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL: PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN

It is the view of the organization that empowerment of people comes through education, training, instilling confidence and providing encouragement to excel. Women and girls are given equal training, opportunity and encouragement along with men in all institutions and schools. Certain areas of study traditionally open only to men and boys are also open to women and girls.

Educational Institutes: Primary and secondary schools have been mentioned above.

Within India, only the government operates Colleges and Universities. However, when the government feels that a private institution is upholding and providing a high standard of education, the government can grant that institution the status of “Deemed University.” The AIMS Medical College and the other institutions of higher education mentioned below have all been conferred Deemed University status by the Government of India.

AIMS Medical College:
AIMS College of Nursing
AIMS College of Pharmaceutical Science
Amrita Institute of Technology and Science
Amrita Institute of Management
Amrita Institute of Advanced Computing
Amrita Institute of Computer Technology
Industrial Training Centre

4 & 5. UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS: REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY & IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH

The AIMS Hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology Department serves the needs of high-risk mothers and babies, and the AIMS Medical College teaches midwife skills to qualified laypeople. The feeding program, housing program, and pensions for destitute women (mentioned above) also contribute to the mental and physical well-being of mothers and their children.

6. UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL: COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES

An AIDS Care Centre for residence, hospital and hospice care in Tiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was inaugurated in September 2003. There are plans under way for a prostitute relief program which will include HIV/AIDS education and treatment.

7. UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL: ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

The organisation has started the GreenFriends™ program to educate children and youth about environmental protection and preservation and to mobilize them for positive action. Activities include care of nature and regular tree planting: 100,000 saplings are distributed and planted each November in the state of Kerala, India alone. GreenFriends™ branches are active throughout the Untied States and Europe. Additionally, all the organization branches and institutions practice recycling and conservancy of resources, and buildings are designed and constructed with consideration for sustainability and environmental impact.

8. UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL: DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT

Participation in various initiatives such as the Global Peace Initiative of Women Religious and Spiritual Leaders (Geneva, 2002) and the Millennium Peace Summit of World Religious and Spiritual Leaders (UN, NYC 2000) began a trend of  partnership activities and networking on the part of Amma and the Math, expected to evolve into cooperative actions for development programs as opportunities arise.
